Why Toothpaste Is Always Striped

Stand in front of any pharmacy shelf and you'll notice something oddly consistent: toothpaste tubes almost always squeeze out in neat, parallel stripes of white and red, or white and blue, or sometimes all three. Most of us use it twice a day without a second thought — until one day the question just lands: why is it striped at all? It doesn't seem strictly necessary. Plain white paste cleans teeth just fine. So what's going on inside that tube?

The confusion is understandable, and it runs deeper than aesthetics. Some people assume the stripes are different ingredients that need to be kept separate until the moment of use. What Striped Toothpaste Actually Does Differently in the Tube

The most practical question is whether the stripes serve any real function — and the honest answer is: sometimes yes, mostly no. In most striped toothpastes on the market today, the colored stripes are cosmetically distinct but chemically identical in function to the white base. They contain the same active cleaning and fluoride compounds. The stripe exists to signal something to the consumer — freshness, whitening power, gum protection — rather than to deliver a chemically separate ingredient.

That said, the engineering required to keep stripes intact all the way from factory to toothbrush is genuinely clever. The tube is filled with white paste first, and a narrow inner sleeve or divider near the nozzle holds a small reservoir of colored gel. How Striped Toothpaste Was Invented and Who Patented It First

The striped toothpaste tube as we know it was invented by Leonard Marraffino, an American inventor who filed a U.S. patent for the technology in 1955 (Patent No. 2,789,731, granted in 1957). Marraffino's design described a method for producing a striped toothpaste using a tube with a specially designed nozzle that held a secondary material near the opening. When the tube was squeezed, both substances emerged together in a visually distinct pattern. It was an elegant mechanical solution that required no pumps, batteries, or moving parts.

Marraffino's patent was acquired by Unilever, who used it to launch Stripe toothpaste in the United States in 1955 — a product whose very name announced the novelty of its appearance. Stripe was a hit, and competitors quickly took notice. Beecham (later absorbed into GlaxoSmithKline) introduced Aquafresh in 1973 in the United Kingdom, famously featuring a three-stripe design of white, red, and blue — each stripe notionally representing a different benefit (cavity protection, fresh breath, and gum care). Aquafresh became one of the most recognizable toothpaste designs in the world and cemented the idea that stripes could stand for something beyond decoration.

Why Toothpaste Brands Keep Stripes Even When Plain Paste Would Work

If the stripes are largely cosmetic, why hasn't the industry simply moved on? The short answer is that stripes work extraordinarily well as a visual communication tool on a crowded shelf. A tube of plain white paste communicates almost nothing at a glance. A tube with a bold red stripe signals freshness and intensity; a blue stripe suggests clean and clinical; a green stripe evokes natural or herbal ingredients. Shoppers make purchase decisions in seconds, and color is one of the fastest signals the human brain can process. Stripes give brands a way to tell a story without a single word.

There's also a powerful inertia at play. Generations of consumers have grown up associating stripes with "complete" or "multi-benefit" toothpaste. Launching a premium product in plain white paste would feel — however irrationally — like a step backward. Brands that have tested minimalist, single-color formulas in focus groups often find that consumers perceive them as less effective, even when the formula is identical. Finally, the manufacturing infrastructure for striped toothpaste is now so standardized and cost-effective that there's no financial incentive to abandon it. The Colored Square Myth and Other Striped Toothpaste Misconceptions

Perhaps the most persistent myth about toothpaste stripes is the one about the small colored square or rectangle printed at the very bottom of the tube's crimp. According to a widely shared internet rumor, these squares are secret industry codes: black means the toothpaste is "all chemical," green means "all natural," red means "natural and chemical," and blue means "natural and medicine." This is entirely false. Those marks are called eye marks or registration marks, and they exist solely for manufacturing machinery — sensors on the production line use them to detect where to cut, fold, and seal each tube at high speed. They have absolutely nothing to do with ingredients.

Another common misconception is that the different stripes in a tube must be kept separate because they would react dangerously if mixed. In reality, the ingredients in toothpaste stripes are carefully formulated to be chemically compatible. The separation is maintained by the tube's nozzle geometry, not by any chemical incompatibility.
